11. Abbey - Cahalan, James M. – EDWARD ABBEY. A Life. University of Arizona Press, Tucson, 2001, 1st edition, 8vo., blue cloth, pict. dustjacket, 357pp., illus., biblio., index. A definitive biography of a contemporary literary icon whose life was a web of contradictions. "Edward Abbey: A Life" sets the record straight on Cactus Ed, giving readers a fuller, more human Abbey than most have ever known. It separates fact from fiction, showing that much of the myth surrounding Abbey—such as his birth in Home, Pennsylvania, and later residence in Oracle, Arizona—was self-created and self-perpetuated. It also shows that Abbey cultivated a persona both in his books and as a public speaker that contradicted his true nature: publicly racy and sardonic, he was privately reserved and somber. Cahalan studied all of Abbey’s works and private papers and interviewed many people who knew him—including the models for characters in The Brave Cowboy and The Monkey Wrench Gang—to create the most complete picture to date of the writer’s life. New. $27.95
12. Abbey - Crumbo, Kim (forward by Edward Abbey) – A RIVER RUNNER'S GUIDE TO THE HISTORY OF THE GRAND CANYON. Johnson Books, Colorado, 1981, 1st edition, small 8vo., pict. wraps, 61pp. plus map section in back, many historic photos, biblio. Abbey in his foreword suggests anti-aircraft weapons for river runners as a cure for over flights. This was later revised as the National Park Service frowned on this reasoning. In a mile-by-mile log from Lee's Ferry to Grand Wash Cliffs, Crumbo tells the history of the River and Canyon in fascinating detail. In Abbey's forward he says "It is an honor to be a visitor in the Grand Canyon of the Colorado; as it is an honor and a privilege to be alive, however briefly, on this marvelous planet we call earth." VG+. $35.00
13. Abbey - Hafen, Lyman and Milo McCowan – EDWARD ABBEY: An Interview at Pack Creek Ranch. Vinegar Tom Press, NM, 1999, 2nd pr., 8vo., wraps, 37pp. Known as one of the all-time best interviews of Edward Abbey. A must for all Abbey fans. New. $25.00

19. Adams, Eilean – HELL OR HIGH WATER. James White's Disputed Passage through Grand Canyon, 1867. Utah State University Press, Logan, 2001, 220pp., illus., references. Although John Wesley Powell and party are usually given credit for the first river descent through the Grand Canyon, the ghost of James White has haunted those claims. White was a Colorado prospector, who, almost two years before Powell’s journey, washed up on a makeshift raft at Callville, Nevada. His claim to have entered the Colorado above the San Juan River with another man (soon drowned) as they fled from Indians was widely disseminated and believed for a time, but Powell and his successors on the river publicly discounted it. Colorado River runners and historians have since debated whether White’s passage through Grand Canyon even could have happened. Hell or High Water is the first full account of White’s story and how it became distorted and he disparaged over time. It is also a fascinating detective story, recounting how White’s granddaughter, Eilean Adams, over decades and with the assistance of a couple of notable Colorado River historians who believed he could have done what he claimed, gradually uncovered the record of James White’s adventure and put together a plausible narrative of how and why he ended up floating helplessly down a turbulent river, entrenched in massive cliffs, with nothing but a driftwood raft to carry him through. 53. Bagley, Will – BLOOD OF THE PROPHETS. Brigham Young and the Massacre at Mountain Meadows. University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 2002, 1st ed, tall 8vo., tan cloth, pict. dj, 493pp., illus. The massacre at Mountain Meadows on September 11, 1857, was the single most violent act to occur on the overland trails, yet it has been all but forgotten. Will Bagley’s Blood of the Prophets is the most extensive investigation of the events surrounding the mass killings since Juanita Brooks published her groundbreaking study. At Mountain Meadows, local settlers and Southern Paiute warriors waylaid the Fancher party, a wagon train bound from Arkansas to California. Pinned down in a circle of wagons in a remote corner of southwestern Utah, some forty men, thirty women, and seventy children fought for their lives for five days before surrendering under a promise of safe conduct. As the Mormon militia and their Indian allies escorted the emigrants away from their wagons, they killed all of them except seventeen children below the age of seven. Bagley draws on unpublished journals, letters, and documents from Mormon archives as well as from accounts by Mormons who opposed subsequent efforts to cover up or expunge the record. He explains how the murders occurred, reveals the involvement of territorial governor Brigham Young, and explores the subsequent suppression and distortion of the events surrounding the massacre. Also included here are maps and photographs never before published. Scarce 1st edition. New. $95.00

Utah State University Press, Logan, 2002, 8vo., black cloth w/gilt, pict. dustjacket, 216pp., biblio., index, illus. Across north-central New Mexico and Arizona, along the line of Route 66, now Interstate 40, there first ran a little-known wagon trail called Beale’s Wagon Road, after Edward F. Beale, who surveyed it for the War Department in 1857. This survey became famous for employing camels. Not so well known is the fate of the first emigrants who the next year attempted to follow its tracks. When a party of Missouri and Iowa emigrants known as the Rose-Baley wagon train arrived in Albuquerque, they were encouraged to be the first to try the new Beale road. Their journey became a rolling disaster. Beale’s trail was more difficult to follow than expected; water sources and feed for livestock harder to find. Indians along the way had been described as peaceful, but the Hualapais persistently harassed the emigrants and shot their stock, and when the wagon train finally reached the Colorado River, a large party of Mojaves attacked them. Several of the emigrants were killed, and the remainder began a difficult retreat to Albuquerque. New.................... $39.95

The most significant and compelling testimony yet in support of life in Mexico’s Colorado River delta. The region was sparsely populated by farmers and indigenous people. Its wildlife was little known. And it was in Mexico, invisible to North Americans. Thus, after the Water Treaty of 1944 was signed by the United States and Mexico, the flow of the Colorado River diminished to a trickle in the Mexican delta, transforming a fertile land of green lagoons into a dry wasteland. And nobody seemed to care. The Mexican delta of the Colorado River is becoming one of the most remarkable environmental stories on the continent. Bergman helps us see the variety and abundance of life in this once-forgotten place. VG+ or better. $27.50

85. Blackburn, Fred M. – THE WETHERILLS. Friends of Mesa Verde. Special Edition. The Durango Herald Small Press, Colorado, 2006, 8vo., pict. boards, 213pp., many historic photographs (not included in softcover edition). The Wetherills -- parents, five sons and one daughter -- came from the Midwest to homestead in a fertile Colorado valley, only to find the ruins of a centuries-old structure on their land. Who had built the now collapsed stone walls? And where had they gone? That first discovery led to many more, and what followed would etch their names into southwestern history. Decades before the government or scientific institutions acted to preserve Mesa Verde, the Wetherills stood apart, convinced that their Quaker faith had led them here to protect prehistoric sites from wanton destruction. Based on decades of meticulous research, author Blackburn sets the record straight on these early Friends of Mesa Verde. Hartford Publishing Co., CT, 1869, 1st edition, 8vo., maroon cloth, 528pp., with map, portraits, and 12 full page illustrations. Over the plains--over the mountains--through the great interior basin--over the Sierra Nevadas--to and up and down the Pacific coast with details of the wonderful natural scenery, agriculture, mines, business, social life, progress, and prospects of Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia; including a full description of the Pacific Railroad; and of the life of the Mormons, Indians, and Chinese. The book contains much of value to Western Americana buffs. But of very special interest to River-Canyon collectors is an obscure passing reference on Page 500 that reads: "...the great mocking mystery of our geography is the Grand Canyon of the Colorado and the...country...around it." Bear in mind, now, that Bowles' reference to the Grand Canyon was printed in 1869, and possibly came into being, in Bowles' fertile journalistic mind, a year earlier during his tour of the West. Bowles discusses the Colorado at some length after this reference, and describes James White's alleged "first" descent of the River. First mention of Grand Canyon on page 504. 98. Bowman, Eldon G. and Jack Smith – BEALE'S ROAD THROUGH ARIZONA. Being an Account of the Exploration and Establishment of an Emigrant Road to California Along the 35th Parallel. Number One in a Series Published by the Flagstaff Corral of Westerners International, Arizona, 1979, 8vo., brown wraps, 27pp., photos. Privately produced in an edition of 275 copies numbered and signed. This is an account of the exploration and use of the first federally-funded wagon road in the Southwest. The route was marked in 1857-58 from Fort Smith, Arkansas to the Colorado River by the colorful Lieutenant Edward F. Beale. It was in Arizona on this expedition that he successfully conducted the Army's famous experiment in using Arabian camels. Emigrant wagon trains followed the road in 1858 only to be repulsed by Indians; Fort Mojave was established on the river to protect travelers. Gold was discovered at Lynx Creek (near Prescott) and Beale's Road drew gold-seekers from the coast as well as from the mid-west. Large cattle and sheep drives soon followed with increased emigrant traffic until the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad (Santa Fe) followed in Beale's tracks in 1883. Today Highway 66 and Interstate 40 follow much of Beale's Road to Southern California. Numbered copy, SIGNED by Bowman and Smith. 100. Boyer, Diane E. and Robert H. Webb – DAMMING GRAND CANYON. The 1923 USGS Colorado River Expedition. Utah State University Press, Logan, 2007, 8vo., cloth, 280pp., illus. In 1923, America paid close attention, via special radio broadcasts, newspaper headlines, and cover stories in popular magazines, as a government party descended the Colorado to survey Grand Canyon. Fifty years after John Wesley Powell's journey, the canyon still had an aura of mystery and extreme danger. At one point, the party was thought lost in a flood. Something important besides adventure was going on. Led by Claude Birdseye and including colorful characters such as early river-runner Emery Kolb, popular writer Lewis Freeman, and hydraulic engineer Eugene La Rue, the expedition not only made the first accurate survey of the river gorge but sought to decide the canyon's fate. The primary goal was to determine the best places to dam the Grand. With Boulder Dam not yet built, the USGS, especially La Rue, contested with the Bureau of Reclamation over how best to develop the Colorado River. The survey party played a major role in what was known and thought about Grand Canyon. The authors weave a narrative from the party's firsthand accounts and frame it with a thorough history of water politics and development and the Colorado River. The recommended dams were not built, but the survey both provided base data that stood the test of time and helped define Grand Canyon in the popular imagination. New. $34.95
101. Boyer, Dorothy Fillerup (edited by) – WILLIAM DERBY JOHNSON, JR. Journal Excerpts, 1850-1894. Privately published, Legend eXpress Publishing, AZ, 2005, limited printing, 4to., green wraps, 354pp., b/w photos. Of interest is Chapter 3, pages 9-33, titled, "Association With Major John Wesley Powell's Group, 1871-1872". William Johnson met, worked for and studied under several members of the second Powell expedition over the winter of 1871-1872. His journal of the events and his association with Dellenbaugh, Thompson and others is most informative. Powell's men did not just sit around waiting for winter to end and Johnson was a large part of their activities from late November 1871 to mid-July 1872. Johnson was almost a member of the crew for Powell's second trip, but backed out after some advice from Bishop Levi Stewart on July 15, 1872, as too risky to go through Grand Canyon. The Johnson Utah/Mormon journals of his life and activities in southern Utah and Salt Lake City can stand on its own as an interesting read. University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque, 1999, 1st edition, 4to., brown cloth, pict. dustjacket, 307pp., illus., references, index. The story of Southern California is fundamentally a story about the control of nature. Beginning with the Yuman-speaking tribes encountered by the Spanish in the sixteenth century, deBuys traces the subsequent exploration and development of the region through the Gold Rush of 1849, the government-sponsored surveys that followed, and the inept tinkering with the river by an assortment of irrigation and development interests that resulted in the floods that formed the Salton Sea nearly a century ago. He introduces us to a gallery of rogues and dreamers who saw a great future for this arid wilderness but could never refrain from interference with the forces of nature. The floods that produced the Salton Sea created a vast desert oasis, but the agricultural exploitation of the region, combined with evaporation, poisoned that paradise. Ford 130. 214. Denton, Sally – AMERICAN MASSACRE. The Tragedy at Mountain Meadows, September 1857. Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 2003, 8vo., tan boards, pict. dustjacket, 306pp., index. In September 1857, a wagon train passing through Utah laden with gold was attacked. Approximately 140 people were slaughtered; only 17 children under the age of eight were spared. This incident in an open field called Mountain Meadows has ever since been the focus of passionate debate: Is it possible that official Mormon dignitaries were responsible for the massacre? In her riveting book, Sally Denton snakes a fiercely convincing argument that they were. The author—herself of Mormon descent—first traces the extraordinary emergence of the Mormons and the little-known nineteenth-century intrigues and tensions between their leaders and the U.S. government, fueled by the Mormons' zealotry and exclusionary practices. We see how by 1857 they were unique as a religious group in ruling an entire American territory, Utah, and commanding their own exclusive government and army. Denton makes clear that, in the immediate aftermath of the massacre, the church began placing the blame on a discredited Mormon, John D. Lee, and on various Native Americans. She cites contemporaneous records and newly discovered documents to support her argument that, in fact, the Mormon leader, Brigham Young, bore significant responsibility—that Young, impelled by the church's financial crises, facing increasingly intense scrutiny and condemnation by the federal government, incited the crime by both word and deed. Finally, Denton explains how the rapidly expanding and enormously rich Mormon church of today still struggles to absolve itself of responsibility for what may well be an act of religious fanaticism unparalleled in the annals of American history. American Massacre is totally absorbing in its narrative as it brings to life a tragic moment in our history. New. $26.95

216. Dimock, Brad – SUNK WITHOUT A SOUND. The Tragic Colorado River Honeymoon of Glen and Bessie Hyde. Fretwater Press, Arizona, 2001, 1st edition, 8vo., red cloth w/gilt, pict. dustjacket, map endpapers, 288pp., photos, index. Glen and Bessie Hyde began their honeymoon trip down the Green and Colorado Rivers on October 20, 1928. A month later they hiked to the rim of Grand Canyon, resupplied, and returned to their boat. When they did not arrive at trip’s end, Glen’s father launched an exhaustive search of lower Grand Canyon. The Hydes’ crude sweep scow was found in calm water, fully loaded. But Glen and Bessie had vanished without a trace. So began the greatest mystery in the annals of whitewater navigation. More than 40 years later, in 1971, an older woman on a Grand Canyon river trip announced she was Bessie Hyde. She said she had stabbed Glen, hiked out, and started life anew. In 1976 a skeleton thought to be Glen Hyde’s was found at the Canyon rim with a bullet in the skull. Since then, another suspected Glen and another Bessie have appeared, further convoluting the myth of the Hydes. Author and boatman Brad Dimock searched the country for the true story of the Hydes. He followed each story and obscure lead to its end, even going to the extreme of recreating the Hydes’ archaic craft for a harrowing trip through Grand Canyon with his own bride. Sunk Without a Sound is the riveting tale of the search for Glen and Bessie Hyde. "A damned good book. Hard to put down." [Tony Hillerman] Ford 41. As new. SIGNED by Dimock. $35.00
217. Dimock, Brad – THE VERY HARD WAY. Bert Loper and the Colorado Rive. Fretwater Press, Arizona, 2007, 8vo., map endpapers, 457pp., illus., index. Bert Loper, the Grand Old Man of the Colorado, was born the day Major Powell discovered the confluence of the San Juan and Colorado in 1869. He died just days after the first motorboat had passed through Grand Canyon. He knew every river runner in between, and by the time of his death at 80 years old, had run more of the Colorado than anyone. But it was never easy--orphaned an abused, Loper had to make his way along the bottom of society, often as a hard-rock miner, coal miner or lonely placer miner on a gravel bar. But in the Colorado River he found inspiration, and he died at the oars of his own wooden boat in a major Grand Canyon Rapid. Loper is truly mythic, and his is the story of the Colorado.

218. Dimock, Brad (editor) – EVERY RAPID SPEAKS PLAINLY. The Salmon, Green, and Colorado River Journals of Buzz Holmstrom including the 1938 accounts of Amos Burg, Philip Lundstrom, and Willis Johnson. Fretwater Press, Arizona, 2003, 8vo., 252pp., illus. In 1937, Haldane "Buzz" Holmstrom launched his home-made wooden rowboat at Green River Wyoming and rowed more than 1,000 rapid-strewn miles to Boulder Dam. He was the first to do it alone. A year earlier he had soloed Idaho's Salmon – The River of No Return. Although Holmstrom tried to keep his exploits private, the press made him a national celebrity. In 1938, Holmstrom repeated his Green and Colorado trip for film. Now Brad Dimock, one of Holmstrom's biographers, has transcribed each of Holmstrom's journals, as well as those of his 1938 companions, to more fully tell the story of one of America's greatest, most eloquent, and most humble boatmen. For those who have read The Doing of the Thing and want to know Holmstrom better, or for those who simply want to follow a brilliant man, through his own words, as he moves uneasily from the age of wilderness expeditions to the more modern commercialized era, Every Rapid Speaks Plainly will speak to you. 230. Dutton, Clarence E. – TERTIARY HISTORY OF THE GRAND CAÑON DISTRICT. University of Arizona Press, Tempe, 2001 reprint of 1882, 4to., brown cloth, pict. dustjacket, 264pp., 3 color and 39 b/w illus., introduction by Wallace Stegner; foreword by Stephen J. Pyne. Monograph only. Originally published in 1882, Clarence Dutton’s Tertiary History of the Grand Cañon District has become one of the definitive books on the Grand Canyon. Commissioned as a study of the region’s geology and issued by the fledgling U.S. Geological Survey, it is as much admired today for its literary as its scientific merits. With its beautiful illustrations by Thomas Moran and William Henry Holmes, it is a seminal work on the Canyon that has never been surpassed for its eloquence and authority. This new edition of Dutton’s magnum opus makes that work available once again. Visitors to the Canyon will gain a new appreciation of its majesty as Dutton takes readers on several excursions among its castellated and cathedral-like peaks and ridges. Along the way, he explains the peculiar characteristics of different rocks, the water-sculpturing process, volcanic cones and outflows, the extent of the river’s erosion, and other geological features. Dutton’s Tertiary History remains arguably the most evocative and compelling geological writing ever done on the Grand Canyon region. As Stephen Pyne observes in his foreword, Dutton “recast a rocky peninsula into geo-poetry, reshaped an amorphous panorama of Time into narrative History, and transformed an American scene into a universal symbol.” No one who has thrilled to the majesty of the Grand Canyon will fail to be moved by this timeless work. Clarence E. Dutton (1841-1912) was head of the division of volcanic geology for the U.S. Geological Survey and carried out geological investigations in the Grand Canyon and on the plateaus of Utah. "Eddy ran the [Colorado] river at high water in the summer of 1927 and followed in November with a run of the Grand Canyon in low water. His crew, mostly college men, were novices on the river with the exception of Parley Galloway, son of the great riverman Nat Galloway. Their experiences were in marked contrast with those of most other voyagers, for every mile seems to have presented a life and death issue. Yet, notwithstanding the awful risks, Clyde and his boys made a good job of it, and he certainly wrote an entertaining book." Farquhar 55a.

The vivid thread connecting these essays is the Navajo concept of a sacred geography. Engelhard has traveled and explored the Southwest for close to twenty years. River wisdom postulates that there are two kinds of boaters: Those who have flipped and those who will. Most of the contributors to this anthology fall into the former category. In this book are stories of rafters, canoeists, kayakers, and dory men. You will meet two brave youths swimming the entire Grand Canyon, a bear hitching a ride in a boat, naked canoeists, egg-slinging river guides, a floating turkey, and rangers assassinating a goat. You will witness epic wrecks, strange games and vehicles, and tourists getting lost on the river. University of Arizona Press, Tucson, 2005, 8vo., pict. wraps, 224pp., index, biblio., illus. George Corning Fraser, who lived in the days before automobile travel became a way of life, was an easterner who loved to vacation on horseback in the American Southwest. No mere tourist, he sought out the most remote and forbidding landscapes he could find: the seldom-visited country north of the Grand Canyon, the vast slickrock expanses of the Navajo Reservation, and sites such as Zion Canyon and Capitol Reef before they became national parks. An amateur geologist, Fraser stood at the same panoramic viewpoints used by Major John Wesley Powell to make the first maps of the Plateau Province. As he penned his own memorable observations of the region’s landforms, he also wrote of campouts at stunning Grand Canyon vistas or meals shared with forest rangers and cowhands, recorded sympathetic accounts of local residents, and told of hazards he encountered on rocky trails and primitive wagon tracks. Accompanied by a selection of photographs taken by Fraser and his fellow travelers, Journeys in the Canyon Lands brings to life the Southwest’s breathtaking backcountry on the brink of discovery. 318. Gordon, Greg – LANDSCAPE OF DESIRE. Identity and Nature in Utah's Canyon Country. Utah State University Press, Logan, 2003, 8vo., 213pp. Landscape of Desire powerfully documents and celebrates a place and the evolutions that occur when human beings are intimately connected to their surroundings. Greg Gordon accomplishes this with a tapestry of writing that interweaves land use history, natural history, experiential education, and personal reflection. He tracks the geomorphology of southern Utah as well as the creatures and plants his student group encounters, the history lessons (planned and unplanned), the trials and joys of gathering so many individuals into a cohesive will, and his own personal epiphanies, restraints, insights, and disillusionments. Landscape of Desire examines the plight of the western landscape. It discusses a wide range of issues, including mining, grazing, dams, recreation, wilderness, and land management.

Tourists who took the mule trip on the 14-mile trail to the Bridge had already braved a rudimentary road over sand and slickrock to reach the Lodge, and were the self-selected few who sought such adventure in the era before sport utility vehicles and power boats opened the region to many.
