2006 POSTER

THE CONDOR RETURNS.
Five Quail Books, Arizona, 2006, photography by Dave Mortenson, poster design by The Corbenic Group, limited edition. This poster celebrates the return of one of the world’s rarest and most imperiled vertebrates to the Colorado Plateau. Last seen in 1924, the California condor was returned 10 years ago in 1996. The California condor is one of the largest flying birds in the world: an adult can weigh 22 pounds and have a wing span of 9-1/2 feet. During the Late Pleistocene, the species ranged over much of the southwest United States. Many fossils, eggshells, bones and feathers have been found in caves within the Grand Canyon. Condor #23 "found" hiker and photographer Dave Mortenson on the Marble Canyon rim. "Out for the day to hike to rim points, I was surprised when the condor soared just a few feet over my head. It was one of the most moving experiences I've had in the Canyon," said Mortenson. Using his telephoto lens, Dave was able to photograph this massive bird perched on the Canyon's edge high above the Colorado River. The poster has three inset scenes that give a unique perspective to this rare bird. Jaci Sawtelle of The Corbenic Group made the condor seem alive with her poster design.
